Weight Loss Tips - Why Fiber is Important and How to Add it to Your Diet

There are many weight loss tips that have been handed down from generation to generation; none is as great as eating your fruits and vegetables. There are many reasons that this holds true, but one important reason that many people do not stop to think about is fiber content. Fruit and vegetables are not the only fibrous foods you can eat when trying to lose weight, but they do pack a big punch when eaten raw.

Fiber is an important part of any diet, and not just for those wanting to lose weight. Absorbing many times its weight in water, fiber fills you up by expanding in your digestive track. This not only keeps you fuller longer, but the bulk it provides aids in overall digestion, helping your body rid itself of toxins and even cholesterol. Think of fiber as a sponge that wipes up all the dirt and grime off your counter top. Your digestive track will also remain healthy and clean with regular intake of fiber.

There are two types of fiber: water soluble and water insoluble. Water soluble fiber comes from fruits, nuts, and beans. Vegetables and whole grains are a great source of water insoluble fiber. Either is equally healthy for your body, but chances are you are not getting enough of either. While doctors recommend up to 25 grams a day, most people only get 10-15 grams of fiber each day. Luckily there are many delicious and easy ways to add fiber to your diet.

There are fiber supplements available on the market, but it is always best to increase fiber through your diet. Foods high in fiber include fruits such as apples and bananas, beans and legumes, whole grains such as brown rice and barley, and vegetables such as salad greens. Leaving the skin on any fruit or vegetable will increase the fiber you consume.

Next time someone asks you for some of your best weight loss tips, be sure to tell them to increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables. Better yet, you can tell them the benefits of fiber and how they can increase their state of health while losing weight.
